Cerenity Marian introduces Mneme Therapy

Posted on August 3rd, 2011 in Marian Center | No Comments

When a person with memory loss or dementia is given a blank canvas and some paint the assumption is that the person most likely won’t know what to do with it.  But, when Larry Homan started working with residents affected by memory loss at Cerenity Marian, the blank canvases in front of them turned into magnificent pieces of artwork. Larry explains his method as engaging residents brain activity through visual, verbal and sensory exercises. He begins by reminising with residents and while they talk, the person paints. The therapy is called Mneme and rather than performing a paint stroke, the individual replicates a motion they did years ago. While it takes a lot of patience and some practice, at the end of each painting session the piece of art is simply amazing and creates a wonderful keep sake for the resident’s family. If you would like to learn more about Larry’s method you can visit his website at www.ArtWithoutBoundaries.net/LH.html.
